KUZNETSOVA SNEAKS THROUGH

Jelena Jankovic has been defeated by Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open. Kuznetsova won the match by 0-6, 6-2, 7-5.

The way Kuznetsova had played in the opening set, very few people would have expected her to dominate in the next two sets. But, the Russian player did that. She looked a completely different player after losing the first set. Read more »

JANKOVIC LOSES OUT

Jelena Jankovic has been defeated by her compatriot Ana Ivanovic in the third round of the Australian Open 2013. Ivanovic won the match in the straight sets by 7-5, 6-3. With the help of this comfortable win, Ivanovic reached the pre quarter final round.

There is not much difference in the world rankings of these two players and a tight contest was anticipated by the crowd. But, that didn’t happen. It was Ivanovic who dominated for most parts of the match and pulled off an easy victory.

Ivanovic started pretty well. With a serve break in the third game of the first set, she got ahead by 2-1. The next three games went with the serve and at the end of the sixth game; Ivanovic was leading by 4-2.

Jankovic’s service was broken again in the seventh game. Ivanovic was serving for the set in the 8th game, but, she didn’t manage to serve it out. She dropped her serve and the lead was reduced to 3-5.

Jankovic equalized the scores with another serve break in the 10th game. The set seemed to be going towards the tie breaker, but, that wasn’t the case to be. Ivanovic got yet another breakthrough in the 11th game and then, by holding her serve in the next game, she won the first set.

In the second set, Ivanovic held her entire serve and broke Jankovic’s service in the third and the ninth game to win the set by 6-3.

In the next match, Ivanovic will take on Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland. Radwanska has been in great form recently and she has won her last 12 games on the trot. So, it’s not going to be easy for Ivanovic to go past Radwanska.

Ivanovic and Radwanska have played against each other 7 times before.  Out of those 7 matches, Ivanovic won 3 and lost 4.

JANKOVIC BELIEVES

Jelena Jankovic has said that she has the capacity to become the no. 1 player in the world again. Jankovic didn’t have a good 2012 season, but, the Serbian player is confident that she would put up a much better performance in the upcoming season. Jankovic was in Dubai attending the draw ceremony of Al Habtoor Tennis Championship.

After the draw ceremony, she talked to the reporters and answered their questions. She told the reporters, “Dubai is a glorious place and I love coming here. This is the best place to prepare for the Australian Open. There are hard courts available here and the facilities are also amazing.”

When asked about her performance in the last season, Jankovic said, “It was a disappointing season for me. In fact, it was one of my worst seasons. But, the season has finished now and I don’t want to think too much about what went wrong. I just want to concentrate on the upcoming season.”

“I have been working very hard on my fitness. In the last season, I struggled with my fitness at times. I don’t want it to happen in the upcoming season as well. For performing well, you need to be super fit. So, my focus is on fitness at the moment.”

When asked why she has not been able to win even a single Grand Slam title in her career so far, Jankovic said, “Look there is no particular reason for it. May be I have not been able to soak the pressure in the Grand Slam tournaments, but, I am only 27 and there are still a few years of tennis ahead of me. I can still win a few Grand Slams. Hopefully, I would be able to cross this hurdle in the 2013 season.”

CZECH VICTORY

Czech Republic has won the Federation cup by defeating Serbia in the final. Lucie Safarova secured the victory of Czech Republic by defeating Jelena Jankovic in the final singles match. Safarova didn’t have to toil hard to defeat Jankovic. The Czech player was on fire. She played with extreme dominance and let Jankovic win only a couple of games in the entire match.

Safarova was off to a glorious start in the match. She broke Jankovic’s service in the very first game of the first set. She got another breakthrough in the third game. At the end of the fourth game, Safarova was ahead by 4-0 and Jankovic was under huge pressure. The Serbian player held her service in the fifth game, but, that was the only game to be won by her in the opening set. Safarova won the next couple of games and ran away with the set.

In the second set, both the players held their service in the first couple of games and it seemed that the second set is going to be closer than the first one, but, that wasn’t the case to be. The second set proved to be one sided as well. The last five games were won by Safarova and Jankovic lost the second consecutive set by the same margin of 6-1.

Safarova looked ecstatic in the post match interview.  The Czech player said, “It’s certainly one of the biggest victories of my career. I just can’t express my happiness at the moment. Putting up such a performance in front of the home crowd is really satisfactory.”

“It’s a team effort. Each and every member of the team should be credited. We were under huge pressure when we were down by 0-2, but, the way we came back was really remarkable.

JANKOVIC FALLS SHORT

Jelena Jankovic has been defeated by Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain in a third round match of the China Open. Navarro won the match in the straight sets by 7-5, 6-4. There were a number of unforced errors made by Jankovic in the match. The former world no. 1 lost the match in 1 hour and 58 minutes. This was the sixth match between these two players and Navarro has won two of them.

After winning the match, Navarro said, “I had lost quite a few matches against Jelena in the past. So, I was a bit nervous before coming into the match and because of that nervousness, I made some mistakes in the beginning. But, I am happy that I raised the standard of my game at the right point of time.”

Jankovic started the match in a fantastic manner. She got a couple of breakthroughs and won the first three games in a row to take a lead of 3-0. It seemed that the Serbian superstar would win the set comfortably, but, Navarro wasn’t going to give up that easily. She broke Jankovic’s service in the fourth game and served out the next game to reduce the lead to 3-2.

Jankovic broke Navarro’s service for the third time in the seventh game to make the score 5-2. She only had to hold her service in the next game to win the first set, but, she missed on that opportunity. Navarro got three breakthroughs after that and won the next five games consecutively to win the first set by 7-5.

In the second set, both the players were very weak on their service. Navarro held her service in the first game. But, after that there were 8 consecutive breakthroughs in the set and at the end of the ninth game, the score was 5-4 in the favour of Navarro. The Spaniard managed to get another breakthrough in the 10th game and won the match.

Navarro will take on Marion Bartoli of France in her next match.

JANKOVIC BEATS DELLACQUA

Jelena Jankovic has defeated Casey Dellacqua of Australia in the semi final of the Texas Open. Jankovic won the match in the straight sets by 7-5, 6-4. Dellacqua made a lot of mistakes in the match and allowed Jankovic to run away with the match easily. The Australian player didn’t manage to smash any ace in the match. She also double faulted on several occasions. It took Jankovic 1 hour and 42 minutes to secure a place in the finals. This was the third match between these two players and Jankovic has come out victorious on all the three occasions.

Jankovic was given a tough fight by the Aussie player in the first set. Neither of the two players managed to sneak a breakthrough till the end of the 10th game and the scores were levelled at 5-5. But, the Serbian player got a breakthrough in the 11th game and then, claimed the first set by holding her service in the next game. In the second set, both the players held their service in the first 8 games and the scores were levelled at 4-4 at the end of the 8th game. Jankovic held her service in the 9th game as well and it seemed that the set might go into the tie breaker. But, that didn’t happen and Jankovic wrapped up the match by breaking Dellacqua’s service in the 10th game.

In the post match interview, Jankovic praised her opponent. She said that Dellacqua played well and made her work hard in both the sets. As per Jankovic, she is very happy with her form at the moment. She is hitting the ball beautifully and if she continues playing like this, there is a very good chance of her winning the title. In the final, Jankovic will play against Roberta Vinci of Italy.
