VOLVO CAR OPEN: 5 FORMER CHAMPIONS TO PLAY IN 2017

For its 2017 tournament holding from the 1st of April to the 9th of the same month, the Volvo Car Open will welcome back no less than five of its past champions for the competition holding at the Volvo Car Stadium in Charleston, South Carolina.


In the field currently are the likes of Venus Williams (’04), JelenaJankovic (’07) and Samantha Stosur (’10). The last two making up the five are Caroline Wozniacki (’11), and Andrea Petkovic (’14).

Speaking in readiness for the tournament, Volvo Car Open Tournament Manager, Eleanor Adams wished all champions best of luck as they prepared to compete and hoped to meet them all soon.

“Our patrons have rallied behind our Charleston champions year-after-year, and have become their lifelong fans. We wish each champion the best of luck in the competition and can’t wait to welcome them home.”

For Williams, it would be her ninth appearance in the Charleston player field. Here, she holds a 20-7 record. Williams who sits at No. 13 in the world ranking recently made it into the finals of the 2017 Australian Open.

Jankovic on the other hand would be making her 13th appearance in the Volvo Car Open draw. In 2007, she won the tournament and six years later, she reached the finals of the tournament. She holds a 21-11 Charleston record.

Ten times, Stosur has played the Volvo Car Open and boasts of a 15-9 record. The tournament would be Wozniacki’s fifth appearance in Charleston. She holds a 14-3 record here, won the title in 2011 and got to the finals in 2009.

It will be Petkovic’sfifth time in Charleston and she holds an 11-3 record. She won the tournament in 2014 and made it to the semifinals in 2015.
